Agra Gharana Music

September 01, 2012 | New Delhi

The evening opened with an introduction to the history of this important school of Hindustani classical music and followed with an exploration of the cultural context in which the Agra gharana originated. The performance itself focused on well-known compositions by Agra’s most famous masters, as well as the preferred ragas of this school, in order to introduce some of its fundamental characteristics such as gayaki, alaap, layakari and bandish ka kehna. Influences from other styles were also explained through its relationship with the Atrauli and Gwalior gharanas.
