Bettiah Gharana Music

June, 2012 | Patna

To better understand the history, form and aesthetic of Dhrupad singing, SAAR explored how the Bettiah Gharana, one of the earliest schools of this meditative style, incorporates all four Dhrupad banis. Known to have flourished during the 19th century in the courts of Bettiah in West Champaran, the Bettiah Gharana’s influence extended throughout Eastern India. However, despite its popularity in the past, this musical form has been eclipsed by the dominant presence of the Dagar bani and struggles to survive today.
