Himachali Folk Music

July 23, 2012 | New Delhi

In this baithak we tried to convey the tremendous diversity to be found within the folk music of Himachal Pradesh, despite it being one of the smallest states in all of India. The chosen songs showcased the three distinct musical styles of the region, each reflective of the state’s three geographical planes. Drawing on themes from folklore, myth and romance, the performance also illustrated the braiding of poetry, rhythm and meter in Himachal music, as well as the subtle influence of Sufi inspired Punjabi music.
