Qawwali at Fez Festival of Sufi Culture

April 14, 2012 | Morocco

In this unique performance of Qawwali, the greatest period of Sufi music in the subcontinent was brought to life through the selected qalams associated with Hazrat Nizamuddin and his disciple, Amir Khusrau in the 14th century. These mystical songs highlight some of the distinct features of this musical genre including the concept of sama: the use of music for mystical union with the Shaikh, or God, through powerful rhythmic patterns and improvisation.
