Coinciding with the 100 year anniversary of the Hindi Film Industry, this lecture series took the audience on a three-day voyage of Hindi Film Music from 1930 to the 1980’s, examining it as a musical genre in its own right. The programme illustrated the distinct transformations that this musical form underwent during these five pivotal decades; thematically, stylistically, and instrumentally, whilst demonstrating how specific songs can be read as indicators of social and cultural change in the history of modern India. All lectures were conducted by Vikram Lall.
